Our vision is to motivate and empower individuals to make a positive difference within our global society through understanding and action based on effective and compassionate leadership.
The Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) was founded by Hugh O'Brian in 1958. That year, Mr. O'Brian had the unique opportunity to spend nine inspirational days with the great humanitarian, Dr. Albert Schweitzer at his clinic in Africa. There, Dr. Schweitzer impressed upon him that "the most important thing in education is to teach young people to think for themselves." That thought became the cornerstone for the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership, which Mr. O'Brian founded two weeks after his return to Los Angeles.
Since then, HOBY has carried out its mission to "provide lifelong leadership development opportunities that empower individuals to achieve their highest potential."
HOBY implements its purpose through its seven core values:
Generous gifts from the Maryland community, combined with the active support of volunteers, provide the backbone of support necessary to present HOBY Maryland's programs. HOBY does not accept any government or United Way funding. All financial support comes from the sponsorship of the private sector, service organizations, and people like you.
The Maryland Leadership Seminar and Community Leadership Workshops (CLeWs) are the embodiment of Hugh O'Brian's promise to develop leadership skills in today's youth. Planned and produced by a local, all-volunteer committee, each event allows Maryland's high school sophomores to interact with business and community leaders from across the state.
Programs provide students with an opportunity to learn about America's incentive system. Panelists present the topic, lead a question and answer segment, and join in small discussion groups to promote "how to think, not what to think." Student groups are led by facilitators who help stimulate discussion and encourage interaction. HOBY Maryland builds the leadership skills of students through exposure to topics such as education, business ethics, entrepreneurship, free enterprise, volunteerism and media.
Hugh O'Brian Youth Maryland is a non-profit organization.
