HOBY Maryland has an annual budget for existing programs that ranges between $40,000 and $50,000. One hundred percent of our funds are used directly for conducting our programs. We spend no money for an office, and have no paid staff or administrative personnel, since our entire staff is comprised of volunteers.

Since its inception, the HOBY Maryland Leadership Seminar has been funded completely by businesses, individuals and civic organizations. We hope to enlarge our community support by involving a greater number of organizations in both the sponsorship of, and direct participation in, our programs. Growth in community involvement is the key to maintaining the success and vitality of our programs. Community-based funding enables organizations to become directly involved with the development of young people in their area. By expanding community support, we are able to bring the benefits of the program to more students. We urge you to become our ally in this mission.

The Maryland Jaycees were approached in 1977 by Hugh O'Brian to launch the HOBY organization in Maryland. As we increased from our 48 student participation in 1978, the need to call on other service groups for support was apparent. The Maryland Federation of Women's Clubs, Kiwanis International, and Optimist International are both the financial and person power backbone of the organization.

Financial contributions are critical to the continued vitality of HOBY Maryland's programs. Companies are encouraged to sponsor groups of student ambassadors or to host a meal or an activity during the seminar weekend. Businesses each typically sponsor 5-10 ambassadors from the region at large. Civic organizations are encouraged to sponsor the individual students from their area high schools. For details on the cost of meal and event sponsorships, or direct financial contributions please contact the Seminar Chair.

Another method of showing support for the seminar is the donation of products or services in-kind. The list below is a summary of key items needed for the seminar.

Virtually all of our financial and in-kind support comes from corporate, civic, and private philanthropic sources. We do not solicit, but will accept donations that are passed through local United Way organizations, strictly if HOBY Maryland is specifically named as the recipient of such donations. (HOBY Maryland is not a United Way member.)

HOBY Maryland's most direct beneficiaries are the more than 400 Maryland high school sophomores who attend our leadership seminar and CLEW programs every year. HOBY Maryand benefits those schools which send their student ambassadors to our seminars and CLEWs, since they return to their schools with a new vitality, a greater sense of purpose, and a new set of resources that they can use to make their schools and communities better places in which to live. Our student's sponsors benefit from the knowledge that they have contributed to the enhancement of their student's leadership potential, and therefore to their community's future. In addition, all sponsoring organizations receive recognition in commensurate with their contribution. Major sponsors may even be able to make arrangements to be permitted to display banners and other materials throughout the seminar weekend.
