4) A special request
It is my sincere pleasure to welcome you to our 2009 seminar season. The
past year was an overwhelming success for us, and as incoming seminar chair,
I very much would like to repeat and build upon that success. To make this
happen, a number of you have already promised to join me in what I think
will be an outstanding year. However, for some of you, this will be your
first time volunteering with HOBY, and others you've lost count. Either
way, I hope you will think about just 1 way you would like to make the
seminar better this year. Whatever that one way is, consider what it will
take to make that one thing happen.
Many of our volunteers commit all the time they can to us, even if that is
primarily working only during the seminar weekend. But HOBY is truly a
year-long process. We will be working tirelessly from now through May to
make this year truly outstanding. If we are to be successful, take a moment
and consider what time you will be able to give to HOBY during this entire
year -- not just being there seminar weekend -- but to make your one thing
happen from start to finish. We are always welcome to another helping hand,
and I promise you, there is a place for everyone to help. Whatever it is
you have interest in making happen, just let me know.
I sincerely look forward to working with each of you this year. Being asked
to be the first MD alumnus to chair the seminar is an honor and a privledge
I do not take lightly. I thank you in advance for the hours I know each of
you will put in to make HOBY a reality for another group of outstanding
sophomores.
HOBY Hugs,
Aaron M. Bernstein

5) Fall Alumni Reunion - October 25, 1:30-4:30 PM at the House of Ruth in
Baltimore - Playing with homeless children at a Halloween party.
Hey HOBY,
The Fall Planning Committee needs your help! In order to put on an
OUTSTANDING Halloween Party for the homeless children, we need supplies and
money! I am asking all of you to go back to schools, families, and friends
and ask for donations to pay for the party. We have a long list of supplies
that we need to buy and we need your help to do it.
You can donate in two ways: Money or Supplies. If you would like to donate
money, please write out a Money Order to Justin DeLoatch and write HOBY
Reunion in the memo. All money must be mailed to the below address by
October 17th.
4621 Horizon Circle
Apt #2
Pikesville, MD 21208
All money donated will be used for the Reunion. If there is extra money left
over, it will be deposited in the Alumni Association's bank account. Give as
little or as much as you would like. There is no minimum and every bit will
help.
If you would like to donate supplies, please buy the supplies yourself and
mail them to me at the below address by October 17th.
Justin DeLoatch
7227 Lee Deforest Drive
Columbia, MD 21046
Directly following this email will be a list of supplies. If you are going
to donate supplies, please tell me what you are going to donate so that I
may focus on getting other things that are still not claimed.
I would like to thank you all in advance to opening your hearts to the
homeless children of House of Ruth and helping them to have a great
Halloween.

HOBY's Leadership For Service is the newest -- and quickly becoming the largest -- single program ever undertaken by Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership in its history. Conceived and designed in 1996, the program was formally adopted by HOBY National's Board of Trustees as part of our three-year strategic long-range plan. HOBY National piloted the program with 400 students in 1997, and refined it based on the results of an external evaluation. In 1999 it became nationally required of all seminar sites and is being implemented with help from our strategic partners, including America's Promise and Farmers Insurance Group. By 2000, HOBY will have 14,000 students throughout the country giving back a minimum of 1,400,000 hours of service to their communities every year.
As part of our commitment to the Presidents' Summit For America's Future, all former HOBY Ambassadors are challenged to complete a minimum of 100 hours of volunteer service, annually. HOBY's Leadership For Service encourages young adults to give back through community service. To log in your service hours,Click here.
